About

Ngalawi is a small organisation and prides itself on being able to maintain affordable quality private housing for Aboriginal people and their families in the inner city of Sydney. Ngalawi provides housing for singles and families. Our organisation is unique and is the only Aboriginal Housing Co-operative in NSW. We are a member of the Associate to Resource Co-operative Housing (ARCH) and are committed to the co-operative principles.
 

History

Ngalawi was set up by a group of Aboriginal people living in Sydney in 1990 who wanted to live by the philosophies of co-operatives. At the time, the NSW Government had established a program that partnered with local community groups with local government to develop housing co-operatives. Ngalawi incorporated in 1994 and received our first house in the same year. We now have properties in Marrickville and Leichhardt local government areas.

Mission

Ngalawi’s main objective is to provide affordable, adequate housing in a safe Aboriginal cultural environment with and for people who have common interests.
 

Vision

Ngalawi’s vision is to grow to become an affordable housing provider for Aboriginal’s living across Sydney and eventually provide the opportunity for affordable Aboriginal home ownership.

Housing Application

To be eligible to apply for Ngalawi Housing, you must meet the following criteria:
- Must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Must have resided in Sydney for over 12 months
- Must be committed to the Principles of Co-operatives
- Must be willing to contribute to the operation of the co-operative
- Must be involved in the Aboriginal community of the inner west/inner city of Sydney
- Is not a current tenant of Housing NSW or any other social housing organisation

Please complete the Ngalawi Housing Application form and return to Ngalawi. Your application form will be reviewed and you will be notified by Ngalawi of the status of your application.
